ABILENE -- The McMurry women's basketball team played smothering defense in the second half as they held Concordia Texas to only 19 points in the frame en route to McMurry's 73-64 American Southwest Conference West Division win over the Tornados Saturday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena.
The win pushes McMurry to 17-4 overall and 14-3 in conference play. The McMurry women remain in first place in the ASC West Division as they hit the road to take on Sul Ross State in another ASC West game on Thursday. Tip time from Alpine is slated for 5:30 pm.
The McMurry women struggled defensively in the first half as the Tornados went to the free throw line a lot in the frame and made McMurry pay. CTX was 21 of 25 from the charity stripe, which was a large reason why the Tornados took a 45-41 lead into the break.
But McMurry jumped out of the gate quick in the second half as they went on a 14-2 run over the first five minutes of the frame to take a 55-47 lead. CTX then went on an 8-0 run of its own to tie the game at 55 with 11 minutes remaining.
But McMurry responded again (and this time for good) as they went on a 12-2 run over the next eight minutes to take control of the game with a 67-57 lead with only three minutes left in regulation. That deficit proved to be too much for the Tornados to overcome as McMurry won its regular-season home finale.
Sophomore center
Anna Berthel led McMurry with a team-high 15 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Sophomore guard Brena Anderson-Burton followed Berthel's lead with 14 points off the bench on 6 of 10 shooting from the floor.
It was “Senior Day” at Kimbrell as it was the regular-season home finale for McMurry. McMurry honored all five of its women's basketball seniors after the game concluded. Playing in their final regular-season game at Kimbrell Arena,
Amber Horton scored 10 points (including 8 of 8 from the line), grabbed three rebounds and tallied three steals;
Dominique Brown scored six points, dished out four assists and tallied four steals;
Allison Nelson scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds;
Jabri Butler grabbed one rebound; and
