ALPINE – Sul Ross State outscored McMurry by 15 points in the second half as the Lobos upset the No. 1 team in the American Southwest Conference West Division, 59-56, Thursday night at the Gallego Center.
The game was tied at 56 with seven seconds left when Sul Ross State's Anthony Woods made one of two free throws to give the Lobos a 57-56 lead. McMurry's
Jamal Anene then turned the ball over to Sul Ross on the ensuing inbounds pass, which forced
Robert Moreno to foul the Lobos' Filiberto Torres with just three seconds left. Torres made both free throws and
Richard Jones' halfcourt desperation 3-pointer missed as the buzzer sounded to complete the upset for the Lobos.
McMurry falls to 15-7 on the year and 14-4 in the ASC. McMurry is still in first place in the ASC West as they head to Brownwood to take on Howard Payne on Saturday. The Lobos improve to 7-14 and 7-11.
McMurry shot 50 percent from the floor (13 of 26) in the first half as they lead by as many as 13 points (34-21) before taking a 34-22 advantage into the break.
But poor shooting in the second half doomed McMurry as the iron was unkind to the team to the tune of a 30 percent shooting performance from the floor in the frame (6 of 20). Meanwhile, the Lobos lit it up as they shot 59 percent in the second half (13 of 22) as they dominated the frame to get the win.
