CLARKSVILLE, Ark. –
Robert Moreno scored 16 of his career-high 19 points in the second half helping McMurry erase a 12-point deficit and hold on to beat the University of the Ozarks on its home floor Friday night. Moreno hit five of his six 3-point field goals in the second half to spark the comeback victory.
McMurry trailed 29-24 at half and then the Eagles went on a 13-2 run early in the second half to make the score 48-36 with 12:57 left to go. However, Moreno countered with a 3-pointer with 12:45 left to cut the lead to single digits. Then,
Steven Luckey hit back-to-back 3-pointers for McMurry cutting the Eagle let to three points at 50-47 with 9:05 left to go.
A couple of minutes later, Moreno unloaded as the senior scored the next 12 points for McMurry on four consecutive 3-point field goals. By the time he drained the fourth, which was actually his fifth-straight successful attempt from beyond the 3-point arc, McMurry had built a 59-55 lead with 5:31 to go.
From there, McMurry led by as many as six points, but the Ozarks cut it close several times. With 20 seconds left, Moreno made one of two free throws to give McMurry a 69-65 lead. Then, each team exchanged a free throw apiece before Clayton Crouch hit a highly contested 3-pointer with six seconds remaining to make the score 70-69.
With three seconds left, the Eagles fouled McMurry's
Ricky Burney; he missed both free throws, but the half-court heave by Crouch as time expired hit off the left side of the backboard.
McMurry improved to 6-2 overall and moved to 4-1 in American Southwest Conference play. The Eagles fell to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in conference competition. McMurry hit 10 of 15 3-point attempts in the second half and finished 12 of 26 for the contest.
Moreno had five assists and three steals to accompany his career night. He finished 6 of 10 from the floor and 6 of 8 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Jeremie Hart added 18 points, six rebounds and four assists. Luckey came off the bench to score 12 and Burney had nine points, six assists and four steals.
The ASC's leading scorer, Blake Mitchem, scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the losing effort for the Eagles. He also had a pair of steals and two blocks. Woolverton finished with 15 points and Andrew Williams added 13.
McMurry will take on one of the top teams from the ASC East Division Sunday at 4 p.m. when it takes on UT-Dallas in Richardson. The Comets are 7-1 overall and 4-0 against ASC competitors.
