KERRVILLE - A third-straight appearance in the American Southwest Conference Postseason Tournament for McMurry is left in the hands of Hardin-Simmons after Schreiner defeated McMurry 24-26, 23-25, 25-17,
25-21, 15-13 Wednesday night. Schreiner's victory over McMurry splits the season series between the two teams and leaves each team with an 11-6 conference record. If Schreiner beats Hardin-Simmons Saturday, it will propel the Mountaineers past McMurry for the third representative of the west division for the ASC Tournament.
The Mountaineers had four players in double-figures for kills with Tiffany Miller leading the way with 18 kills. Kayce Westberry had 13 kills while Caitlin Gayle and Kayla Gunstream had 10 kills apiece to lead Schreiner. The Mountaineers' duo of Denise Pichot and Lauren Tharp combined for 40 assists and helped Schreiner hit .229 for the match. Defensively, Schreiner tallied 14 blocks led by Miller's seven total stops with four of those solo. Brittany Alvillar led the Mountaineers in the digs category with 17.
On McMurry's side,
Terah Brown led with 17 kills and a .353 hitting percentage to accompany five total blocks, three of which were solo.
Bailey Marcum added 11 kills and
Danielle Kelton had 10.
Sarah Anding
had 11 digs and McMurry hit .149 as a team with
Carmyn Wingrove leading setters with 24 assists.
McMurry defeated Schreiner at home earlier this season, but Hardin-Simmons beat McMurry twice. With Schreiner and McMurry holding the same conference record through Wednesday night's match, if HSU
beats Schreiner, McMurry will get in the tournament regardless of its outcome with Sul Ross State in Alpine Saturday. The tiebreaker is decided first between head to head records between the schools. Since
the teams split matches this season, then the tiebreaker goes next to the team's record against the best team in the west division and down in descending order if need be. If Schreiner beats HSU, that will
provide a season split between the two teams and leave McMurry out because HSU defeated McMurry twice this season.
McMurry won the first two sets by a combined four points, but Schreiner took over in sets three and four to knot the match at two sets apiece. McMurry appeared to have the momentum in set five leading 12-9. However, with the small confines of Edington Gym where the stands were full, the home crowd helped Schreiner rally to score six out of the last seven points in the match.
McMurry's final regular season game is Saturday in Alpine against Sul Ross State at Noon.
