McMurry Football Welcomes Correy Washington as New Defensive Coordinator

ABILENE, TX – McMurry University Football is thrilled to announce the appointment of Correy Washington as its new Defensive Coordinator. Washington brings a proven track record of success, leadership, and a commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the field.

Washington joins the War Hawks after a remarkable tenure at Brazos Christian School, where he led the football program to a 12-1 record in 2024. Under his guidance, the team secured District, Area, and Regional Championships, culminating in a State Runner-Up finish. His offensive unit averaged an impressive 36.7 points per game, while his defense allowed a mere 157 points throughout the entire season.

Prior to Brazos Christian, Washington spearheaded the transition of Brentwood Christian's football program from 6-man to 11-man, achieving a 9-3 record and an Area Championship in just their second season of 11-man competition. Over six seasons, his teams compiled a 40-23 record, boasting one of TAPPS' top defenses and allowing only 13 points per game in regular season play.

"I couldn't be more excited than I am to welcome Coach Washington to the McMurry Football Family," Head Coach Jordan Neal had to say. "Coach Washington has proven himself as a winner everywhere he's been, and I love having a former head coach, especially one of his caliber, leading our defense. We will play an aggressive style of defense, and Coach will build on the success we've had here on that side of the ball. Besides the fact that he's a great ball coach, he fits every aspect of our program's priorities and values. Can't wait to witness all he will accomplish here at McMurry."

Washington's coaching philosophy emphasizes disciplined preparation, athletic excellence, academic achievement, and personal growth. As an Athletic Director, he has developed comprehensive programs that foster commitment, teamwork, and resilience. His leadership is rooted in respect, hard work, and spiritual development, ensuring that every athlete thrives as a competitor and a person of Christ.

"I am honored and thrilled to join the McMurry University Football program," said Coach Washington. "My wife, Desiree, and I are especially excited to return to Abilene, where we have so many fond memories. We are eager to contribute to the War Hawks' success and build a defense that embodies toughness, discipline, and a winning mentality."

Washington's notable achievements include:
  • 2023 Dave Campbell's Texas Football 40 Under 40
