War Hawks earn win over Southwestern on Senior Day

ABILENE-  The McMurry women's basketball team met with Southwestern for their Senior Day contest on Sunday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena.

McMurry was able to flex their defense, shooting ability, and their toughness in a big win on Sunday. They were able to hold off numerous runs by the Pirates as they pulled away to win by a wide margin. McMurry improved to 21-4 on the year and finish the Regular Season at the top of their division in the SCAC as they gear up for the Conference Tournament.

The War Hawks got off to a fast start in this one as they jumped out to an early double-digit lead. McMurry was able to move the ball well as the offense was seeming to flow seamlessly in the early going. They would hold their early lead as they led 25-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Southwestern came out in the second quarter looking to make a run and close the gap. The Pirates started off the second quarter on a 6-0 run before the War Hawks got a big 3 from Emily Holland to push the lead back to 11 points at 28-17.

Southwestern would again cut it down to 7 at the 2:00 mark of the second quarter but the War Hawks would get a couple of big baskets to push it back to 11, including an and-1 from Helana Chadwick. McMurry would hold on to their lead as they took a 35-26 lead into the locker room at the break, looking to open the contest up in the second half.

A quick 4-0 run by the Pirates once again put us in a close one, but the War Hawks answered with a 11-0 run of their own to put them ahead by 15 as they looked to put some distance between the 2 teams on the scoreboard. McMurry built up their biggest lead of the game at 46-31 at the next media timeout at the 4:41 mark of the third quarter.

The War Hawks would build their lead all the way up to 55-31 before Southwestern would get their next bucket at the 1:45 mark of the third quarter. The McMurry defense shined in the 3rd period as they held the Pirates to just 9 points in the quarter. The War Hawks led 60-35 going into the final quarter of play.

McMurry would prove to be too much for the Pirates down the stretch as they pulled away and never let the contest get any tighter throughout most of the second half. The War Hawks would earn the big win on Senior Day by a score of 81-55.

McMurry was led by Senior Emily Holland with 19 points and followed by Kylie Flippin with 11 points.

Next up for the War Hawks will be the SCAC Championships as they look to make their mark and make a run at a conference championship.
