ABILENE, TX – McMurry University bids farewell to women's basketball coach
Drew Long, who has accepted the head coaching position at Houston Christian University, his hometown. Long's departure marks the end of a remarkable four-year period that saw the War Hawks' program undergo a dramatic transformation.
When Long arrived at McMurry, the program was struggling, having posted a 2-16 record the season prior. However, under his leadership, the War Hawks experienced consistent improvement, culminating in a historic 2024-25 season. McMurry achieved a 23-6 record, capturing a spot in the NCAA Division III tournament and ultimately reaching the Sweet 16, a feat that ranks as the third-best season in program history. Long's overall record at McMurry was a testament to his dedication, finishing with a 54-48 mark.
For his outstanding work, Long was named the 2024-25 D3Hoops.com Region 10 Coach of the Year, a fitting accolade for a coach who engineered such a profound turnaround.
