Box Score ABILENE- War Hawks fly past Rhodes College in Friday afternoon match-up.
The early stages of this contest would see its share of struggles from both teams offensively. The War Hawks came out slow as they saw Rhodes take a 4-0 lead before they were able to find the basket as they answered with an 11-0 run of their own. McMurry's defense became stingy down the stretch of the opening quarter as they took a 16-8 lead into the second quarter.
The War Hawks were able to maintain their lead and keep the Lynx at a distance throughout the second quarter. The score from the second quarter was much closer than the first, as McMurry outscored Rhodes 14-12 in the period.
Emily Holland led the War Hawks in the first half with 13 points, while AC Milam led the Lynx with 6 points.
McMurry would carry their momentum into the second half, as they starter the 3
rd quarter on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 39-22 at the 7:47 mark, forcing a Rhodes timeout to try to stop the run. The Lynx would get a big 3 pointer to put an end to the run, but McMurry answered with a 3 of their own to put the lead right back to 17. The War Hawks would continue the trend of steadily increasing their lead, as they led 52-33 at the end of the third quarter of play.
As the teams went back and forth to start the final quarter of play, McMurry was able to stretch their lead to 22, giving them a 59-37 lead going into a media timeout at the 4:43 mark. Throughout the game, the Lynx had their moments and pushes where they gained a little momentum, but they were never able to push the contest much closer than 15 in the second half. McMurry would continue to get baskets on long possessions in the 4
th quarter, giving them a chance to run the clock down while scoring at the same time. McMurry would go on to win by a score of 66-44.
Emily Holland led all scorers with 23 points, while AC Milam led Rhodes with 16 points.
The War Hawks are back in action tomorrow, January 4
th at 1:00pm against UT-Dallas at Kimbrell Arena.
