Texas Lutheran Stops War Hawks

SEGUIN – Texas Lutheran kept McMurry out of the end zone and took the lead in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 28-6 win on Saturday.

The War Hawks were held to a pair of Jax Rodriguez field goals as McMurry struggled to make big plays.

Rodriguez put the War Hawks on the board for a 3-0 lead with a 36-yard field goal late in the first quarter.

The McM defense kept TLU off the board for 25 minutes but the Bulldogs scored two touchdowns in the final five minutes of the half to take a 14-3 lead into the intermission.

TLU led 28-3 before Rodriguez hit a 24-yard field goal with 10:37 left in the game.

Jess Hoel completed 24 of 41 passes for 290 yards, connecting Kristopher Martin, Kason O'Shields and Thomas Chandler five times each. Martin had 138 yards receiving.

Jack Ishmael led the ground game with 50 yards on 15 attempts.

The McMurry defense played without Kane Strohman who is among the national tackles-for-loss leaders. Zachariah Mitchell had eight tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss, including a sack. He and Dylon Davis each forced a fumble with Markeis Williams and Tyler Johnson getting the recoveries.

The War Hawks try to get back on track next week when Austin College visits for a 1 p.m. contest.
