Martin Sets Career Mark in McMurry Rout

ABILENE – McMurry rolled to a 31-3 Homecoming win over Austin College in a game that featured a new career record for Kristopher Martin.

Maritn caught six passes for 65 yards, pushing his career total to 2,750 and passing Jeret Smith's 2,729 for the new career receiving yards record.

"Homecoming is always a huge deal here at McMurry," said head coach Jordan Neal. "We're really excited that we got guys on the field in all phases. I don't know if we had a player on our sideline that didn't get in the ball game. We lettered a few guys today."

McMurry scored on the first possession, going 82 yards on 14 plays, and never trailed. A 20-yard pass form Jess Hoel to Martin highlighted the drive, which Hoel capped with a one-yard sneak with 8:25 to go in the first quarter.

An Austin College interception set up the Kangaroos' only score, a 22-yard field goal at the 2:10 mark.

"The defense is just insane," said Neal. "Those guys have just gotten better and better and better. I was proud of the fact that we got those stops and kept them out of the end zone."

Hoel and Jack Ishmael connected for a 50-yard pass play to set up a 10-yard touchdown pass from Hoel to Karmelus Card for a 14-3 lead with 9:14 to go in the half.

McMurry went 61 yards on eight plays for a 21-3 lead just before halftime with Hoel carrying the ball in from two yards out.

Jax Rodriguez connected on a 17-yard field goal in the third quarter for a 24-3 lead.

Dylan Slack and Landon Holley connected for a 76-yard touchdown pass with 1:17 left in the game.

Martin got the record on a seven-yard reception in the third quarter.

"We knew that he was close and you know really wanted to get that done for him," said Neal. "He's very deserving. Kris and I have been together for five years and he has been such a productive player for us. He's a team captain, a senior who, who's kind of gone through the muck in the mire. So we're really just excited for him. And now we've got that ball that we can put up in the trophy room."

Hoel was 28 of 42 for 246 yards passing and led the team with 48 yards rushing. He accounted for three touchdowns. Holley had two catches for 83 yards.

"We took care of the ball for the most part on offense," said Neal. "We went out there and played hard and got a huge win."
Zachariah Mitchell led McMurry with eight tackles while Kane Strohman and Herman Lee had two tackles for loss apiece. McMurry kept their guests under 250 yards of offense. The Kangaroos got in the Red Zone four times with only the field goal to show for it.

The War Hawks improve to 5-3 overall and 5-1 in the SCAC. McMurry plays its final road game Saturday at Lyon College.
