Box Score McMurry University's War Hawks, despite 40 points from Coco Rose, lost a 104-100 shootout to Howard Payne University Saturday, Dec. 9 in Kimbrell Arena.
The sophomore guard from Odessa, Texas certainly did his part to keep coach Zach Pickelman's team in the game as he stole the ball twice and scored seven points in a 15-second span. Rose had 24 points Thursday against Sul Ross State.
Also scoring in double digits were senior forward/center Elias Garcia (Houston, Texas) with 17 points and freshman forward Tristan Holden (San Antonio, Texas) with 12.
McMurry won the first half 54-49 but lost the second 55-46. The lead changed hands nine times and the score was tied seven times.
Rose nailed five of his nine three-point attempts while junior guard Matt Pena (El Paso, Texas) made two of his five attempts. At the free throw line, Rose was 5 of 6, freshman guard DeShawn Crawford (DeSoto, Texas) was 4 of 5, junior forward Josh Alcocer (San Antonio, Texas), junior forward T.J. Hilliard (New Orleans, Louisiana) and Garcia all were a perfect 2 of 2, and senior guard C.J. LeBlanc (Dallas, Texas) made his only attempt.
Having seven rebounds each were Crawford, five on offense and two on defense, and Pena, three on offense and four on defense. Holden added five rebounds, one on offense and four on defense. Rose had four steals, Garcia and Crawford had three each, and Pena and LeBlanc had one apiece. Holden and Alcocer both blocked a shot.
This was the third time the War Hawks had scored at least 100 points in a game, with the others being wins.
McMurry,4-4 overall and 0-3 in the American Southwest Conference, plays University of Texas-Dallas at 3 p.m. Dec. 16 in Kimbrell Arena
