Box Score McMurry University's War Hawks broke a three-game losing skid Thursday, Dec. 7 with a 102-92 victory over Sul Ross State University in Kimbrell Arena.
The win means coach Zach Pickelman's team remains undefeated at home this season.
Five players scored in double digits to lead a balanced attack. Sophomore guard Coco Rose (Odessa, Texas) was tops with 24 points, followed by senior guard C.J. LeBlanc (Dallas, Texas) with 16, junior forward T.J. Hilliard (New Orleans, Louisiana) with 15, and senior forward/center Elias Garcia (Houston, Texas) and junior forward Josh Alcocer (San Antonio, Texas), each with 13.
The War Hawks had their biggest lead almost at the end of the game which was the margin of victory. They made a statement in the second half, outscoring the opponent 56-41. The score was tied four times and the lead changed hands once. Rose nailed three of his six three-point attempts. Making free throws proved crucial for McMurry as Rose was 5 of 6, Alcocer was 4 of 4, Garcia was 4 of 5, freshman forward Tristan Holden (San Antonio, Texas) was 3 of 4, LeBlanc was 1 of 1 and freshman guard Deshawn Crawford (DeSoto, Texas) was 1 of 2. LeBlanc had three steals, while junior guard Matt Pena (El Paso, Texas), junior center Andrew Stevenson (Killeen, Texas), Holden, Hilliard and Crawford had one apiece. Holden blocked three shots and led in rebounds with six, one on offense and five on defense.
The game doesn't count in the American Southwest Conference standings because the opponent is reclassifying to Division 2.
McMurry, 4-3 overall and 0-2 in conference, returns to conference play Saturday with a 3 p.m. tipoff against Howard Payne University.
