SAN ANTONIO, TEX. –Freshman
Jenna Vincent's first appearance at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regionals will be one she won't soon forget.
The San Angelo, Texas, native compiled four successive straight-set victories to be crowned the Flight C champion at Trinity University. Her 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Hardin-Simmons University's Audrey Jackson concluded the title chase.
"Jenna prevailed against an opponent who wasn't a good match-up for her," head coach Chris Beaux said. "She fought hard to figure out how to defend against a short angle slice."
Vincent also played an integral role in the top doubles outing. She joined junior
Bridgette Fly (Watauga, Texas) to earn a pair of wins in the Flight B doubles draw. She rolled to 8-3 and 8-2 decisions to move into quarterfinal round play against the draw's top seed. Their run would end there with an 8-0 loss.
"That pairing played very well in the first two matches," Breaux said. "The Southwestern team they ran into in the quarterfinals had a consistent placement of ground strokes and volleys which caused them trouble.
It was a good outing overall for the team," he added. "We had a lot of fun competing. We now more about ourselves and opponents as we reach the end of the fall season. We are looking forward to training in the off-season and coming out strong in the spring."
The tournament concluded the War Hawks brief fall schedule. McMurry's men take their shot at ITA regional successes Thursday, Sept. 29 – Sunday, Oct. 2, at the tournament hosted by Hardin-Simmons University.
