ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Women's Tennis finished out a three-game home stand this weekend with two wins, the latter of which came in a 9-0 sweep of Austin College at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center on Sunday.
Playing with a 3-0 advantage by default, the War Hawks (5-8) completed its first clean sweep this season with four singles and two doubles wins.
The top flight in singles and doubles were both tight, as Hope Turner defeated Gigi Francis in No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 victory. The final tie-breaker was close, but Turner held on for a 10-7 win.
Prior to singles, Turner teamed up with Hannah DeFriend in No. 1 doubles to edge Francis and Kylie Imperial, 8-7. The doubles match was decided in a 10-5 tiebreaker. On the next court, Kaylin Parker and Bridgette Fly handled business with an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles.
Behind Turner on the singles court, DeFriend won a tight battle in the first set over Bailey Standokes before cruising in the second frame to win 7-5, 6-1.
McMurry had total command in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles spots, as Andrea Smith defeated Tara Tran 6-1, 6-0 in the three spot. Parker took over her court after that, winning Flight 4 by a 6-2, 6-1 final.
The War Hawks have now won six of the last seven contests against Austin College, dating back to 2012. Today's win marked the first sweep by either team in that span.
