Women’s Tennis sweeps Lobos for conference win, 9-0

ALPINE, Texas – McMurry Women's Tennis picked up its first American Southwest Conference win in dominant fashion Saturday, completing a 9-0 sweep of Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas.

The War Hawks (6-8, 1-1 ASC) have swept their last two opponents and did not drop any points against the Lobos (0-5, 0-2 ASC) Saturday. McMurry has won eight straight matches over Sul Ross – seven of which were 9-0 sweeps.

"We had a few people come up to play this weekend," said McMurry head coach Chris Breaux. "Both the men and women played well to bring home another 9-0 victory on both sides."

McMurry outscored the Lobos 24-1 in three doubles matches, starting with an 8-0 Flight 2 win by Andrea Smith and McKenzie Carroll. The No. 1 doubles match finished shortly after, as Hope Turner and Hannah DeFriend defeated Delaney Yanez and Veronica Castaneda, 8-0.

The third doubles match also left no doubt with Bridgette Fly and Emily Nuttall taking down Shanyce Ramos and Isabel Sandberg by an 8-1 score.

The singles portion brought more of the same, starting with another perfect sweep by Smith in Flight 3. The match was clinched in Flight 2 as Fly swept Castaneda. Turner then beat Ramos with a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the top seed.

After teaming with Smith for the doubles sweep, Carroll enjoyed a smooth transition to singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win in Flight 4. Nuttall had the same score to win Flight 5. Nelsa Hopper won the final match in Flight 6, defeating Sandberg 6-1, 6-2.

McMurry returns home for its next three matches, starting with West Division rival Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, April 9 at 11 a.m. at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
