ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Women's Tennis won its third straight game Saturday, pleasing the home crowd with a 6-3 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor in American Southwest Conference action at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
The War Hawks (7-8, 2-1 ASC) slipped behind after dropping Flights 2 and 3 in doubles play, but recovered with wins in five of the six singles matches. McMurry handed UMHB its first loss in conference play Saturday, as the Cru fell to 7-10 overall and 2-1 in the ASC.
After UMHB took the first point with a win in Flight 2 doubles, junior Hope Turner and sophomore Hannah DeFriend evened things up with an 8-4 win in the top seed.
Trailing 2-1 after doubles, Turner leveled things up again with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Jalon Burns. UMHB inched back ahead with a win at No. 2 doubles, but McMurry won Flights 3-6 to clinch the match. All four War Hawks in those spots rebounded from a doubles loss with a singles win.
Bridgette Fly tied things up again at No. 3 singles with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Chloe Norris, then Andrea Smith put the War Hawks back on top with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Katy Beach. McKenzie Carroll would put the match out of reach at No. 6 singles with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Victoria Rendon.
The cherry on top came from Kaylin Parker at No. 5 singles, defeating Adrianna McElwain 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 in a three-set showdown.
Dyess Trophy points will be on the line in McMurry's next match, as the team welcomes cross town rival Hardin-Simmons to the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center on Friday, April 15.
