SAN ANTONIO –
Jason Cabe concluded tournament play as a title winner, bringing home a singles flight B consolation title for McMurry Men's Tennis at the ITA Southwest Regional on Sunday.
In a 32-player field, the B singles consolation was an extremely competitive bracket for Cabe to maneuver through. After four rounds, Cabe found himself in Sunday's final against LeTourneau's Alex Barrero. With a tough competitor across the net, Cabe brought his "A" game to the match and defeated Barrero in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to earn the title.
Cabe also teamed up with
Connor Hogan to make a push in flight B doubles. The pair would make it to the semifinal round before falling to UMHB's Ethan Kittredge and Andre Maltzahn, 8-3.
"The competition was very steep and it tested our mental on all levels," said head coach
Chris Breaux. "I'm proud of what the guys were able to accomplish in these four days, especially Jason's success in singles play. We will continue to work hard and carry what we learned this week into our spring season."
Other notable play came from
Chase Daniell and
Reid Smith in the doubles A draw. The duo nearly reached a quarterfinal appearance but would fall just shy of advancing with an 8-6 loss to Southwestern's Hunter Bajoit and Hemanshu Rambojun.
In singles,
Reid Smith would also make a run in A draw consolation, reaching a third round matchup before dropping to SW's Hemanshu Rambojun, 6-2, 6-2.
Freshman
Kyle Smith had three rounds of success in the D singles consolation draw as well.
