ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University men's tennis opens the season with a pair of non-conference losses at Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center Saturday, dropping 8-1 to Trinity University and 7-2 to Dallas Baptist University.
Against Trinity, McM's best battle came at the No. 1 doubles match, with War Hawks duo
Carlos Martinez and
Chase Daniell on the court. The pair snagged the win by an 8-5 margin versus Tu's Christian Settles and Hao Nguyen.
Martinez and Daniell continued their win streak against the Patriots, claiming their second doubles match of the day by a score of 8-6 against Gabe Garrido and Josh Williams.
Daniell also went into a three-set battle in singles play against TU's Jordan Pitts after dropping the first set 2-6. Daniell clawed his way back into the match winning set two by a dominant 6-1 stance, pushing the match to three sets. Daniell would ultimately come up short, dropping the final set 6-4.
In a three-set thriller against DBU's Hunter Terrell, junior
Connor Hogan emerged victorious after dropping the first set 1-6. He would go on to dominate the second set 6-1 and earn a point for McMurry with a 10-5 third set.
A notable singles match effort came from senior
Chris Causer after battling it out in a first-set tiebreaker against TU senior Lars Wiik. Wiik would snag the first set 7-6 and go on to seal the win with a 6-3 second set.
Up next for the War Hawks is Texas Permian Basin on Friday, Feb. 12 at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
