ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Baseball handily won a nonconference matchup Wednesday afternoon at Walt Driggers Field, topping Dallas Christian College, 9-1.
The War Hawks (4-3) used a committee of pitchers to shut down the Crusaders, with both right-hander Derek Hostas and left-hander Dylan Yaws pitching three scoreless innings. Hostas put the Crusaders down in order with four punchouts, while Yaws allowed just one hit and one walk for the win.
Reliever Chris Lewis threw two scoreless innings, with Hunter Brooks recording the last two outs with a pair of strikeouts.
The offense got things started in the first, after the War Hawks put runners on the corners with two outs, as catcher Blaine McRay reached on a fielding error for the first run of the game.
The War Hawks tacked on three more in the third, starting with a two-run homer to left center by first baseman Nick Hamel. The third run came across after Marty Carnahan drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
Right fielder Mike Gonzales chipped in with a two-run homer to left in the fourth, and the War Hawks added two in the sixth, as well, on a sacrifice fly by Matthew Chalk and an RBI double by Hamel.
McMurry scored their final run in the eighth on a pinch-hit RBI single by Kyle Keever, with the Crusaders scratching a run across in the top of the ninth.
Hamel led the War Hawks with three hits, three RBIs and two runs, while both Sam Hillyer and Gonzales added two hits apiece.
Next up for the War Hawks is a trip to Southwestern University, where they will begin a three game series Saturday at 6 p.m. with a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
