GEORGETOWN, Texas – McMurry University Baseball began its three game series at Southwestern Universtiy Saturday evening, falling to the Pirates, 5-3.
The Pirates (3-1) broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on a single and an error and held the War Hawks (4-4) scoreless over the final three innings.
McMurry tied the game in the top of the sixth with two runs of their own, scoring on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by shortstop Devin Molina.
The War Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by centerfielder Josh Burnett. However, the Pirates would tie the game in the bottom half and add single runs in the second and fifth before the McMurry rally in the sixth.
Right-hander Chris Lewis pitched five innings in relief after replacing starter Jack Poe in the first innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on 10 hits. He had two strikeouts, as well. Righty Joseph Perez got the final eight outs allowing just one hit.
Five War Hawks recorded a hit, with Burnett leading the way with a run and an RBI.
The teams meet again Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
