ROME, Ga. – The duo of Chase Daniell and Carlos Martinez came up just short at the ITA Cup, dropping the three matches they competed in. It was the first appearance by McMurry University Tennis at the ITA Cup since 2013.
On Thursday, the pair squared off against Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez and Andrew Imrie of RPI in the opening round. The first set was tightly contested, but RPI came up with the 7-6 (5) win to take the lead in the best-of-three match.
Winning that seventh point gave the momentum to RPI, as it took the second set, 6-0, to win the match.
Martinez and Daniell still had tennis to play, as they competed in the consolation bracket Friday, where they would face Vikram Vasan and Vishnu Joshi of Johns Hopkins. Both sets were competitive, but the Blue Jays came out with the 6-3, 6-4 win.
Daniell and Martinez were able to win a set in their final match of the weekend, but fell 4-6, 6-3, 0-1 (3) to Cole Schneider and Nyathi Motlojoa of Luther College.
This concludes the fall season for the War Hawks, who will begin play once again in the spring.
