SEGUIN, Texas - The McMurry University football game suffered its second road loss of the season, falling by a 65-7 score versus Texas Lutheran University at Bulldog Stadium. The setback to the War Hawks left the team with a record of 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the American Southwest Conference, while the Bulldogs improved to 3-1 and 2-1 in the ASC.
McM found itself behind the eight ball early versus the potent Bulldogs. TLU scored 28 points in the first quarter and 16 in the second, carrying a 44-0 lead into the halftime locker room. The Bulldogs added one more score in the third period – leading 51-0 – before the War Hawks were able to breach the scoreboard.
Beginning matters on their own 17-yard line, McM used another big-strike play to produce its touchdown. Junior quarterback
Kevin Hurley Jr. connected with wide receiver
Eriel Dorsey, also a junior, on a 70-yard catch-and-run. The Dorsey TD capped the six-play, 83-yard series.
Hurley finished the night by completing 17-of-40 passes for 245 yards. He was intercepted once and sacked five times. Dorsey had another fine game, hauling in six passes for 159 yards.
TLU held a decided advantage in total offense, 619 to 252 yards. The bulk of the War Hawks offense came via the pass (245 yards), as the McM rushing game was limited to 7 net yards.
For the fifth-consecutive game, the McMurry defensive unit was led by sophomore linebacker
Josh Smith. Smith rolled up nine total tackles, five solo. Lineman
Darreion McLean had six solo tackles and eight total stops. McLean, along with sophomore linebacker
Xavier Dunn, accounted for McM's two sacks versus the Bulldogs.
Dunn also had 1.5 tackles for loss in the contest.
McMurry will play its second-consecutive road game next Saturday, traveling to Jackson, Miss., to face Belhaven University. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
