War Hawks ring up 27-20 win at Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. – The McMurry University football team rode the arm – and legs – of quarterback Kevin Hurley Jr. to a 27-20 road win at Belhaven University.  Hurley had a part in all four of the War Hawks (2-4, 2-3 ASC) touchdowns versus the Blazers (1-4, 1-3 ASC).

The win also kept McM perfect in the series with Belhaven, improving to 4-0 since the team's first met in 2015.

"I was proud of our effort today," McM head coach Lance Hinson said. "We dealt with adversity against a much-improved and well-coached Belhaven team today. We had some strong individual performances; this was an all-around team win."

And no individual played a larger statistical role than Hurley, who completed 20-of-35 aerials for 352 yards and three passing touchdowns to three different receivers. He also had seven rushes for a team-leading 36 yards and a rushing TD, as well.

The benefactors of Hurley's scoring throws were Eriel Dorsey, Paul Humphrey and Doyle Hughes.  Dorsey registered his third-consecutive 100-plus yard receiving game – and fourth overall – by making eight grabs for 130 yards.  Humphrey and Hughes each had three catches for 79 and 57 yards, respectively.

Dorsey's seven-yard reception with 1:49 left in the second quarter got the War Hawks to within 7-6, after the missed extra point kick. The two teams had played through a scoreless first quarter, before the Blazers tallied early in the second stanza.

After the ensuing kickoff, the McM defense forced a three-and-out by BU. McMurry took possession on its own 43 with just over a minute left in the half. The quick-strike McM offense hit immediately, as Hurley found Trevion Harris (2 receptions/55 yards) with a 56-yard catch-and-run before Harris was downed at the Belhaven one-yard line. Hurley ran the ball in for the score – and Tanner Wright converted the point after – with 22 seconds left, as McM would take the 13-7 advantage into the halftime locker room.

The Blazers had recaptured the lead with 10:50 left in the third quarter, 14-13, executing a 4-play, 43-yard drive that consumed just 1:07 on the clock. But McMurry wasted little time answering, finding the end zone on the ensuing possession. On a first-and-goal from his own 46, Hurley targeted Hughes and the speedy back took the ball and wove his way past the Blazer coverage, putting McM on top, 20-14, after the PAT.

The War Hawks added some insurance on a series that began late in the third period and came to fruition early in the fourth. The 6-play, 70-yard set was capped by a 23-yard hook-up from Hurley to Paul Humphrey with 14:18 left in the game. Wright's kick made it 27-14 in favor of McMurry.

The War Hawks defense took over from there. Led by Josh Smith, Jared Fremin, Derreion McLean and Darius Brooks – who each were credited with six tackles – the unit twice stopped BU scoring attempts in the red zone during the fourth quarter alone. Belhaven did add a final tally with 1:47 left to play, but could get no closer, especially after McMurry successfully recovered the on-side kick.

McLean had 2.0 sacks, while Brooks and Juan Delgado had 1.0 sacks each. Brooks also had a fumble recovery.

McMurry will host Louisiana College next Saturday for its Homecoming Game. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Wilford Moore Stadium.
