Game Recap: Volleyball |

How sweep it is! War Hawks blank Lobos for 10th straight win

ALPINE, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball has won 10 consecutive games to begin the 2018 season after sweeping Sul Ross State University 25-21, 25-15, 25-14, in their American Southwest Conference opener in Alpine, Texas. This is the second time in program history the War Hawks have won double digit games to open the year, having won 17 straight at the start of 2011.

The War Hawks (10-0, 1-0 ASC) used the same recipe they have used all season: balanced offense and superb defense. Senior outside hitter Jasmine Jones led four War Hawks with five or more kills by tallying nine on a .421 hitting percentage. Defensively, junior right side hitter Jordyn Burnell paced the War Hawks with 20 digs.

As a team, McMurry held the Lobos (1-5, 0-2 ASC) to just a .028 attacking percentage. The War Hawks themselves hit .258. The War Hawks were dominant at the net, collecting eight blocks, while not allowing the Lobos to block a single attack. Junior middle blocker Kianni Mitchell was the enforcer, with three solo blocks and two assisted. Mitchell also had five kills.

After a close first set in which the War Hawks won just 25-21 after scoring six of the last eight points to break a 19-19 tie, McMurry turned up the heat in the second frame. The War Hawks hit .391 while holding the Lobos to -.067. The trend continued in the third set, as McMurry hit .357 to the Lobos' .098.

Others to chip in offensively were senior middle blocker Madison Reed and sophomore middle blocker Khristyn Howard, as each had five kills. Reed hit .500 and Howard hit .455.

Sophomore setter Lauryn Davis had a double-double with 10 digs and 11 assists. Davis also had four of the teams five aces. Junior setter Emarie James dished out 15 assists.

The War Hawks continue ASC play Tuesday when they visit Howard Payne University at 7 p.m.
