ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University men's tennis closed out the 2018 season by blanking Concordia University-Texas, 9-0, at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The War Hawks (9-11, 4-2 ASC West) capped the year by recording their seventh shutout of the campaign.
Matters were never much in doubt versus the Tornados (8-8, 2-4 ASC West). McM easily swept through doubles, taking the 3-0 lead in the team score into singles play.
Carlos Martinez and
Clayton Pope took the win at line one, 8-6, improving to 10-4 overall as a team. At line two,
Andrew Hallowell and
Cody Aaron won, 8-1, while
Zach Miller and
Joseph Diaz took line three doubles, 8-2.
The War Hawks won five of the six singles bouts in straight sets. At No. 3 singles, Hallowell won set one, 6-2, but lost the second set, 2-6. He took the deciding third set, 11-9.
Martinez was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at line one singles, improving to a team-leading 15-4 individually. Pope was a 6-2, 7-5 victor. Aaron, Miller and Diaz won at the Nos. 4-6 matches, respectively. Aaron won by a 7-5, 6-2 score, Miller 6-2, 6-1 and Diaz by a 6-0, 6-1 count.
Diaz upped his personal record to 11-7 in singles, thanks to his win.
Pope – the lone senior on the McM roster – played the final game of his four-year career as a War Hawk.
