GEORGETOWN, Texas – The McMurry University tennis teams both took on nationally-ranked foes in Saturday's non-conference matches on the road. The War Hawks men's team lost to NCAA Division III No. 14-ranked Trinity University, 6-1 and fell to host Southwestern University 9-0, while the McM women were defeated by No. 31-ranked Southwestern, 9-0.
The McM men (7-11) started the day taking on Trinity in a neutral site match. The Tigers swept all three doubles matches.
Carlos Martinez and
Clayton Pope lost at line one, 8-4, and
Andrew Hallowell and
Cody Aaron fell at line two, 8-1.
McM's only win of the afternoon came at line three doubles.
Zach Miller and
Joseph Diaz won for the War Hawks by a score of 8-6. The Tigers would go on to sweep four singles matches, with two left unfinished.
Versus Southwestern – which had defeated Trinity earlier in the day – McM lost five of six singles bouts in straight sets. At the line four match, Aaron won the opening set, 6-4, before losing the final two, 6-0, 10-3.
The McM women (9-7) ran into a tough go against the Southwestern women, with both team ranked in the region (McM number 16 and the Pirates number six).
After losing all three doubles matches, McMurry lost in straight sets in all six singles contests. At No. 1 singles, McM's
Samantha Ritz dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision.
Claire Huffine fell 6-3, 6-0 at line two singles.
