CONWAY, Ark. - McMurry University women's tennis team completed its four-match "spring swing" with an unblemished record, knocking off Hendrix University, 7-2, at the Hatcher Tennis Center. The win evened the War Hawks' overall record at 5-5, while the Warriors fell to 3-4.
McMurry had a slim 2-1 lead after the doubles competition to begin the day. The War Hawks' No. 1 team of
Samantha Ritz and
Kiara Jones dropped an 8-3 decision, before both the Nos. 2 and 3 flights went in McMurry's column.
At No. 2 doubles,
Claire Huffine and
Zayra Gomez improved to 4-1 in doubles as a duo, winning by an 8-1 score. At No. 3 line doubles,
Briana Perez and Kaitlyn Roberts blanked their foe by an 8-0 margin.
Ritz bounced back in singles action, winning the No. 1 line by a 7-5, 6-0 score over HC's Becky Sherman. The War Hawks would sweep the Nos. 3-6 lines, as well.
At third singles, McM's
Claire Huffine won a marathon match over Laela Zaidi. Huffine won the opening set, 6-0, but dropped the second, 6-3. In the tie-breaking third, Huffine scored a 10-6 win.
McMurry won the final three matches in straight sets. At the fourth line,
Zayra Gomez polished off Sarah Glass, 6-3, 6-3.
Briana Perez blanked HC's Cooper Chimbel, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, while
Neah Garza dispatched of Sara Hoopchuck, 6-2, 6-0.
