TEXARKANA, Texas - The McMurry University men's tennis teams split its pair of matches on Sunday, defeating Centenary College, 9-0, and losing to Texas A&M University-Texarkana, 7-2, at Texarkana High School. The split left the War Hawks with a 3-6 overall record in 2018.
In the morning match versus Centenary College, McM took control early by sweeping the doubles matches in convincing fashion. McMurry's No. 1 team of
Carlos Martinez and
Clayton Pope, as well as the No. 3 tandem of
Zach Miller and
Joseph Diaz, both won by 8-0 scores. At No. 2 doubles,
Andrew Hallowell and Cody Aaron were 8-3 winners for the War Hawks.
In the individual matches versus Centenary, McM head coach
Mark Hathorn decided to give number one singles player Martinez the match off, bumping up his lineup versus the Gents. The move had no adverse effect on McM, as the War Hawks line-up all won in straight sets. Winning for McMurry at the Nos. 1-6 lines were, respectively: Pope (6-0, 6-3), Hallowell (6-2, 6-3), Aaron (6-1, 6-2), Miller (6-2, 6-2), Diaz (6-0, 6-0) and
Chris Causer (6-0, 6-1).
In its afternoon session versus host TAMU-Texarkana, McM found its only victories at No. 1 and 6 singles, after a being swept in doubles.
At No. 1 singles, Martinez was defeated in the the first set by the Eagles' Gonzalo Vega, 6-4. But the sophomore Martinez took set two, 6-2, before dominating in the tie-breaking third set, 10-0. He improved to a sterling 7-1 in singles this season.
McM newcomer
Joseph Diaz also worked three sets to win at line six singles. Diaz defeated TAMUT's James Birdsong in the opener, 7-5, but dropped set two, 6-3. Diaz won set three by a 10-4 count to improve his personal singles record to 7-2 on the year.
