ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's tennis teams both suffered losses at the hands of NCAA Division II Dallas Baptist University on Saturday morning at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The War Hawks lost the men's match, 7-2, while the women fell by a 9-0 count.
The McM men fell to 1-2, while the women are 0-4.
In the men's bout, the Patriots grabbed a 3-0 lead in the team score by sweeping doubles.
Carlos Martinez and
Andrew Hallowell at No. 1 doubles, as well as
Clayton Pope and
Zach Miller playing No. 2, both lost by 8-6 scores.
Martinez, a sophomore, picked up one of McMurry's points by taking No. 1 singles. Martinez defeated DBU's Cannon James in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 to remain unbeaten in singles action (3-0).
At No. 6 singles, McM newcomer
Joseph Diaz won a 9-7 proset decision over Jacob Brooks.
Like their male counterparts, the McM women were swept in doubles by DBU. At the No. 2 pairs match, newcomers
Gabrielle Ellwanger and
Kiara Jones lost a tough 9-7 decision.
At No. 3 singles, freshman
Claire Huffine won her opening set over Claire Nguyen, 6-3. But Nguyen won set two, 6-4, and the third proset decider, 8-0.
