Box Score 2 KERRVILLE, Texas - McMurry University baseball split its Saturday doubleheader at Schreiner University, to wins the three-game series at Bob Henry Field. After winning Friday's opener, the War Hawks (2-1) lost game one of the Saturday twinbill, 8-6, before bouncing back to take the nightcap, 11-6, from the Mountaineers (2-6).
In game one, the two teams virtually matched each other for the first three innings, sitting at a 6-6 tie. The deadlock stood until the bottom of the sixth, when SU pushed across a pair of runs off of War Hawks reliever
Stephen Norrell (0-1).
In the top of the first, senior
Tyler Jenkins homered for the second time in as many game, smacking a two-out solo shot to right-centerfield. Freshman
Nick Hamel followed with solo homer of his own over the leftfield wall to make it 2-0.
After the Mountaineers evened the score in their half of the first, McMurry added a four-spot in the second.
Kyle Strickland laced a leadoff double. Senior shortstop
Noah Clarkson slapped a one-out RBI single, but was erased trying to advance on the throw. With two down,
Robert White,
Mike Gonzales and
Jordan Speck had consecutive singles (with Speck getting the RBI). Speck stole second and Jenkins drew a walk to load the bases for Hamel.
Hamel drilled a two-run single to right, plating Speck and Gonzales to make it 6-2. But, much like the first inning, SU scored three in the bottom of the second and a solo run in the third to make it 6-6 and then tallied the winning runs in the sixth.
McMurry's Nos. 3-5 batters – Jenkins, Hamel and
Blaine McRay – each collected a pair of hits, as did leadoff man Gonzales. Hamel had three of the War Hawks' six RBI.
In game two, the McMurry looked like it might be headed toward being swept, trailing 4-1 after three innings, with McM's only run coming in the second on another Hamel solo home run. But a fourth-inning eruption by McMurry's bats turned matters on a dime, after eight War Hawks crossed the plate. The big blow was a grand slam homer from senior catcher
Taylor Ward.
In all, the War Hawks amassed 15 hits off of six Mountaineers' pitchers.
Jenkins (1-0), who got the nod as McM's starting pitcher, was the winner. Jenkins went 5.1 innings, permitting six hits and five runs (four earned), to get the win. He struck out four and walked four.
Ben Russell threw the final 3.2 innings to earn the save, registering two "K's" and no walks.
McMurry's Nos. 1-5 hitters each had multiple hits. Gonzales, Speck and Jenkins each had two hits, with Hamel going 3-for-5 in the four hole.
Matthew Chalk went 2-for-5 batting fifth. Hamel and Chalk each had a pair of RBI.
