War Hawks topped by Tornados, 3-1

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball suffered its second American Southwest Conference defeat Tuesday, falling 18-25, 19-25, 25-19, 23-25 to Concordia University Texas at Kimbrell Arena.

After dropping the first two sets, the War Hawks (15-3, 5-2 ASC) flipped a switch in the third set, defeating the Tornados (11-7, 6-2 ASC) 25-19. Tied at 10 in the set, McMurry scored six straight points, which included two kills from sophomore setter Lauryn Davis and a pair of attacking errors by Concordia. The War Hawks extended the lead to as many as eight before taking the set on a kill by junior middle blocker Kianni Mitchell.

The War Hawks carried the momentum with them into the fourth set, scoring four of the first five points. McMurry would later score eight of nine points to build their lead to 15-6. However, the Tornados scored six of the next seven points to force a McMurry timeout leading 16-12. Concordia continued to chip away, eventually taking a 21-20 lead. McMurry made one final effort, but the Tornados held on for the 25-23 set in, taking the match, 3-1.

For the match, the Tornados hit .225 while holding the War Hawks to .181.  Concordia had six service aces to McMurry's three, and had nine blocks to the War Hawks' seven.

Senior outside hitter Jasmine Jones recorded a double-double with team highs in kills, 11, and digs, 18. Elsewhere defensively, senior defensive specialist Christian Brown tallied 16 digs, while senior libero Odalis Rodriguez totaled 13.

Offensively, Mitchell had nine kills on a .364 attacking percentage, and also had four assisted blocks and a solo block. Davis added 15 assists and six digs, while junior setter Emarie James led the War Hawks with 19 assists, also adding eight digs.

The War Hawks remain at Kimbrell Arena for their next match when they host Howard Payne University at 6 p.m. Friday.
