ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball returned to its winning ways Friday night, sweeping Howard Payne University 25-12, 25-16, 25-15 at Kimbrell Arena.
The War Hawks (16-3, 6-2 ASC) jumped all over the Yellow Jackets (2-15, 1-9 ASC) in the first set, leading throughout after a 3-3 tie. In the set, McMurry hit .270 compared to just .027 for Howard Payne.
McMurry continued its dominance in the second set, collecting 17 kills while hitting .469. The War Hawks never trailed in the set, going on a pair of 5-0 runs, including one to break a 4-4 tie. Junior middle blocker Kianni Mitchell had five of her six kills in the set, while sophomore right side hitter Khristyn Howard added four of her team-high nine kills in the set.
Mitchell hit .667 on the evening, while Howard hit .438. Junior middle blocker Justice McGowan added six kills on a .357 attacking percentage.
In the third set, the War Hawks were able to get all their reserves in the match, all of whom contributed. Freshman outside hitter Jessica Lynch came off the bench to record six kills, while freshman setter Myranda Salcedo chipped in four assists and two digs.
Sophomore setter Lauryn Davis led the way offensively with 21 assists, recording a double-double by adding 12 digs. Davis also had two service aces. Junior setter Emarie James dished out 11 assists, and senior libero Odalis Rodriguez had 12 digs.
"We worked as a team, and that was something we did really, really well," Davis said. "We played good, good cover, good pursuit, everything was amazing tonight."
For the match, the War Hawks out hit the Yellow Jackets .361-.095. The War Hawks also had nine aces while keeping the Yellow Jackets off the stat sheet in that category.
McMurry is right back at it tomorrow, facing off against Sul Ross State University at noon at Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks swept the Lobos September 14 in Alpine.
