War Hawks chase off Lobos in sweep

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball picked up its second sweep of the weekend, knocking off American Southwest Conference foe Sul Ross State, 25-23, 25-17, 25-20, Saturday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena.

In a tightly contested first set, the Lobos (4-11, 3-7 ASC) built up an early 9-5 lead. However, the War Hawks (17-3, 7-2 ASC) scored the next six points thanks in part to a pair of kills by senior outside hitter Jasmine Jones, before each team went on separate 3-0 runs. The Lobos would take a late 23-22 lead, but the War Hawks scored the final three points of the set on a pair of kills and a Sul Ross attack error.

The War Hawks never trailed in the second and third sets, leading by as many 10 in the second set and six in the third. McMurry held the Lobos to under a .100 attack percentage in each of those sets, while hitting .353 in the third themselves.

Jones led the way with 14 kills offensively, also adding seven digs, two aces and two assisted blocks. Sophomore right side hitter Khristyn Howard added six kills.

Junior setter Emarie James dished out 17 assists while sophomore setter Lauryn Davis chipped in 12. Senior libero Odalis Rodriguez had a team-high 17 digs, while James added nine.

McMurry had 10 assisted blocks, four of which came from junior middle blocker Kianni Mitchell. The War Hawks also had five aces to the Lobos' two.

For the match, the War Hawks hit .248 compared to just .105 for the Lobos.

Up next for the War Hawks is a rematch with ASC West Division leader, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Tuesday in Belton at 6 p.m.
