ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University men's tennis had little trouble in chalking up an American Southwest Conference West Division win on "Senior Day,' sweeping Howard Payne University, 9-0, at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The War Hawks improved to 5-11 (2-1 ASC West), while the YellowJackets fell to 0-11 (0-2 ASC West).
McM set the tone from the outset, dominating the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead in the team score. The tightest match was at No. 1 doubles, where freshmen
Carlos Martinez and
Andrew Hallowell scored an 8-6 win over HPU's Edgar Torres and Gabe Benitez. The Martinez-Hallowell partnership has a team-best eight victories (8-7 overall).
The No. 2 doubles team of
Clayton Pope and
Travis Gough, as well as the No. 3 doubles duo of
Logan Daniell and
Zach Miller, both dominated their YellowJacket foes by identical 8-1 scores.
It was a similar case in singles, as McMurry controlled matters. The War Hawks won all six bouts, taking five in straight-sets.
Martinez won at No. 1 singles – 6-2, 6-1 – versus HPU's Torres, improving his personal record to a team-leading 11-3 on the year. Martinez extended his singles winning streak to eight matches, as well.
At No. 2, Pope took care of the YellowJackets' Drew Lambert, 6-2, 6-3. At the No. 3 match, Gough was the only War Hawk to work an extra set, defeating Benetiz, 2-6, 6-4 and 10-3 in the tie breaking pro set. Daniell threw a shutout at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0 over HPU's Ryan Barrett.
At the Nos. 5 and 6 slots, newcomers
Xander Smith and
E.J. Cantu were both victorious, as well. Smith took down Noah Martin, 6-4, 6-0, while Cantu won over Andrew Stevenson, 6-0, 6-2.
