ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry University baseball team lost both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to Texas Lutheran University – 7-1 and 14-7 – at Walt Driggers Field. After the losses, the War Hawks sported a 3-7 record, while the Bulldogs improved to 7-5 overall.
In the first game of the afternoon, McM found itself down 7-0, before finally scratching out a run in the bottom of the sixth (of the seven inning game). The War Hawks' lone run came via a sacrifice fly off of the bat of
Noah Clarkson, plating
Tyler Jenkins, who had reached on a leadoff single.
Jenkins (0-2) also absorbed the loss as McM's starting pitcher. Jenkins lasted 3.2 innings, giving up six hits and five runs (four earned). He struck out one and had an uncharacteristic four walks.
Chris Baker went 2-for-3 – with a walk – as the only War Hawk with multiple hits.
In game two, McMurry found itself in a big hole after one-half inning when TLU tallied five runs. McM got one run back in their half of the first, thanks to an RBI single from
Matthew Chalk (2-for-5). Chalk's mark made it 5-1.
But the Bulldogs snapped back with two additional runs in the top of the fourth to lead, 7-1. That was enough to chase McM starter
Mike Gonzales (0-2), who was charged with all seven earned runs and giving up 10 hits in 3.1 innings.
However, in the bottom of the fourth, McM had a rally of its own.
With one out, Clarkson (2-for-5) and
Blaine McRay (2-for-4) laced back-to-back doubles to make it 7-2.
Randy Crevier (2-for-5) then delivered an RBI single through short to drive home McRay.
Robert White (3-for-5,2 runs, 3 RBI) then reached on an error by the secondbaseman.
After a fly out to right, Jenkins – playing third in game two – stepped to the plate. Jenkins then crushed his third home run of the year, a three-run shot to right that cut the deficit to 7-6 after four complete innings.
Unfortunately for McM, the effort was to no avail when – in the top of the fifth – the Bulldogs came back with five runs of their own. TLU pushed across single runs in the sixth and seventh, as well.
McM added its final run of the day in the bottom of the eighth. Baker gapped an RBI double to left-center, his team-leading two-bagger of the year, that drove home White to make it 14-7.
Neither team improved its opponent's batting average numbers in the game. TLU amassed 19 hits off of five War Hawks hurlers, while McMurry collected 15 hits in game two.
