ABILENE, Texas –
Noah Clarkson's two-run triple in the fourth inning would prove to be all the McMurry University baseball team would need on its way to a 5-1 non-conference victory over Schreiner University at Walt Driggers Field. The win improved the War Hawks' record to 4-7 overall, while the Mountaineers fell to 7-6 on the year.
In the fourth, with two out, firstbaseman
Chris Baker (1-for-4) and
Matthew Chalk (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI) had back-to-back singles. With runners on first and second, Clarkson slapped a triple to left-center field, past a diving effort by SU's Sam Pistrui and plating both Baker and Chalk.
Meanwhile, McM starter
Jack Poe (2-1) was masterful. Poe went 6.0 innings and allowed just one hit. Poe struck out six and did not walk a batter.
In the bottom of the sixth, the War Hawks added three more insurance runs.
Payton Stokes (2-for-4, run) led off with a double and
Tyler Jenkins was hit by a pitch, with both men advancing on a balk by Mountaineer starter Kyle Baird (0-1). Chalk then poked a single up the middle to drive home Stokes. An outfield error on Jonas Garcia allowed two more runs – both unearned – to score on what should have been the third out of the inning.
Garrett Scudder pitched a 1-2-3 seventh, but gave up a single and double to open the eighth. That brought on
John Eric Cortez in relief. A walk and base hit allowed the Mountaineers to tally one run (charged to Scudder) before Cortez closed out the inning.
Juan Valadez threw a scoreless ninth to close out the win for the War Hawks and snap the team's three-game skid.
McMurry will host Louisiana College in a three-game series on Friday and Saturday at Driggers Field.
