ABILENE, Texas – For the second time this season, the McMurry University men's basketball team came out on the short end of its match-up versus crosstown rival Hardin-Simmons University, this time suffering an 83-66 setback at Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks fell to 9-14, 4-10 in the ASC, while the Cowboys upped their record to 17-6, 11-3 in ASC contests.
McMurry tallied the first five points of the game. But HSU fought back and took the lead for good with 14:01 left to play in the first half. The Cowboys led at halftime, 42-33. Hardin-Simmons maintained a double-figure lead for the bulk of the second half in keeping the War Hawks at bay.
McM could not slow down the Cowboys hot shooting hands as a team. HSU had a composite shooting percentage of nearly 47 percent (30-64) for the game, after hitting 50 percent (16-32) in the first half alone.
McMurry's defense produced a season-high 14 steals as a unit. Despite those efforts, HSU still managed 20 assists on its 30 field goals made. Hardin-Simmons had 22 points off of 20 War Hawks turnovers.
Freshman
Zacc Carter and senior
Nate Estrada each produced 16 points. Carter shot 7-of-13 from the floor and Estrada made good on 5-of-12 field goals. Each also grabbed three rebounds, with Carter passing off for a team-best three assists and four steals.
Junior forward
Aaron Gettys was his team's third double-digit scorer, with 10 points. Gettys hit 5-of-8 from the field and also hauled in five rebounds, while making four steals, as well.
LaRandall Scroggins and
Kaan Yilmaz had eight and seven points, respectively. Yilmaz led McM with 10 rebounds.
