ABILENE, Texas – For the second-consecutive match, the McMurry University men's tennis team was defeated by an NCAA Division II school in a non-conference match, losing to Dallas Baptist University, 6-3, at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The War Hawks fell to 1-2, while the Patriots upped their record to 4-0.
Senior
Travis Gough was McM's lone victor in singles. Playing in the No. 3 slot, Gough dispatched of DBU's Riley Smith in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Gough was also half of the winning No. 2 doubles match, along with teammate
Clayton Pope. The tandem took a hard-fought 8-5 decision over the Patriots' tandem of Smith and Isaac Childs.
At No. 1 doubles, McMurry's pair of
Carlos Martinez and
Andrew Hallowell won a tough 9-8 (7-4) bout to Dallas Baptist's team of Cannon Jones and Nick Gilmore for McM's other point.
Martinez and DBU's Jones also split sets at No. 1 singles, before the Patriots' player prevailed. Jones won the first set, 6-1, with Martinez winning the second, 6-2. Jones won set three, 6-1.
At No. 2 singles, McM's Pope also lost a three-set decision. Pope took the opening set with Gilmore, 6-2, but then lost the successive sets, 6-1, 6-4.
