LaRandall Scroggins led the McMurry University men's basketball team with 14 points and nine rebounds, but it was not enough in a 67-63 non-conference road loss to Texas Lutheran University at Memorial Gym. The War Hawks fell to 0-2 on the year, while the Bulldogs evened their record at 2-2.
Scroggins hit on 7-of-16 from the floor for McM. He also has two assists and two steals to his credit.
Scroggins and his teammates showed their moxie the entire contest, as McMurry and TLU battled through nine ties and seven lead changes. The game was tied for a full 11 minutes of playing time. The Bulldogs' largest lead was a nine-point bulge in the first half, while the War Hawks led by three with 6:27 left in the second on a
Shakur Smith three-point basket.
Smith finished the evening with 12 points, hitting 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Smith grabbed five rebounds and gave off a pair of assists.
Sophomore transfer
Dedrick Berry Jr. poured in nine of his 11 points in the second half alone. Berry had game-high totals in both assists (6) and steals (3), along with two boards.
Freshman guard
Colin Taylor added eight points to McMurry's coffers.
Darius Watts and
Luke Stephenson had five points, apiece.
McM's defense forced the Bulldogs into 23 turnovers. But TLU won the rebounds battle, 37-32. The War Hawks shot nearly 49 percent (27-63) from the field, while Texas Lutheran hit on just 36 percent (17-47). The Bulldogs held a sizeable margin in free throws made and attempted, converting 25-of-28 (compared to just two attempts by McM, of which both were missed, for the game).
