KERRVILLE, Texas – The McMurry University men's basketball team's second-half comeback was not enough to overcome a slow start in the first, falling to Schreiner University, 82-73, in a non-conference road contest. The loss was the season-opener for the War Hawks (0-1) and the first win of the year for the Mountaineers (1-3).
 
McM trailed at the half, 43-29. However, in the second segment, McMurry clawed back – out-scoring SU, 44-39 – but it was not enough to overcome the 14-point deficit from the first half. Schreiner led wire-to-wire in the game.
 
Senior LaRandall Scroggins was the only War Hawks' starter to reach double digits, tallying 13 points. Scroggins hit 6-of-10 from the floor. He also pulled down four rebounds and had two blocks.
 
Zacc Carter and Mike Williams Jr. were the only other McMurry players to hit double figures. Carter had a team-leading 16 points, connecting on 7-of-11 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.  He also had two assists and five boards.
 
Williams had a double-double by booking 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Williams was an efficient 6-for-8 shooting in just 19 minutes on the court. That helped McM's team to a 44-15 advantage in bench scoring.
 
The biggest difference came at the free throw line, where McM was 6-of-11 for the night.  Conversely, the Mountaineers attempted 38 from the charity stripe, making good on 24.
 
Schreiner also held a comfortable cushion in rebounding, as well. SU pulled down 47 caroms, while the War Hawks managed 32 boards.  Both teams shot around 44 percent from the field, with the War Hawks burying 30-of-68 shots and Schreiner hitting 25-of-57.
 
McMurry will play its second of four-consecutive road games to open the season on Saturday (Nov. 25) evening (5 p.m.) at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin.
