SAN ANTONIO, Texas - McMurry University men's basketball head coach
Zach Pickelman got a final look at his 2017-18 squad in an exhibition setting, as the team dropped an 88-49 decision to NCAA Division I foe University of the Incarnate Word. All 15 players saw action for the War Hawks ahead of next week's season opener at Schreiner University on November 24.
UIW opened the game on a 20-0 run against McM and never looked back. The Cardinals led at the intermission, 51-20.
In the first half, McM hit 9-of-30 from the floor and finished the evening at 28 percent (18-65) from the field. The War Hawks struggled from beyond the arc in the opening period – going 0-for-5 – before burying four treys in the second stanza.
Zacc Carter came of the McMurry bench to top the team in scoring with 10 points. Carter hit 4-of-9 shots and 2-of-2 free throws. He also had two steals in his 19 minutes on the floor.
Darius Watts added eight points, four rebounds and two assists.
Colin Taylor and
Shakur Smith each chipped in five points. Taylor had a team-best three steals.
LaRandall Scroggins' five rebounds paced his team in that category. The Cardinals held a slim 48-45 margin on the boards.
