ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry University tennis teams celebrated its "Senior Day" in style by winning its matches versus Concordia University-Texas at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The War Hawks men's team won by a 9-0 count and the women's squad took an 8-1 victory over the Tornados.
McM paid tribute to
Savannah McClure and
Madison Hathorn on the women's side and men's seniors
Carlos Perez,
Kendal Mann,
Marcus Medellin,
Taylor Freehauf and
Hunter Ward.
"Our seniors are a very special group," McM head coach
Mark Hathorn recounted. "They have provided leadership both on the court and in the classroom. I truly appreciate all that they have given to McMurry Tennis."
In the men's bout, the War Hawks swept the doubles matches to go ahead 3-0 in the team score. The No. 1 McM doubles tandem of Perez and Ward improved to a team-best record of 11-8 with its 8-1 win over CUTX's Iosua Malaki and Jack Proctor.
The second doubles match was won by
Rayce Roberson and Ethan Rodriguez (8-0). No. 3 pairs went to McM's
Kie Jones and
Travis Gough (8-3).
Then War Hawks swept five of the six singles contests in straight sets. The only match going three sets was at No. 4 singles, where
Clayton Pope defeated the Tornados' Proctor, 6-2, 4-6, 10-4.
At Nos. 1-3, Perez, Roberson and Ward were winners. Jones and Mann won at Nos 5 and 6, respectively. Roberson (12-6) and Ward (12-7) are the team's co-leaders in singles wins.
In the women's contest, McMurry was nearly-equally as dominant. The War Hawks swept doubles on the women's wide to lead 3-0, led by a hard-fought, 9-8, win at the No. 2 position by
Samantha Ritz and
Zayra Gomez.
In singles, McM took all five of its singles wins in straight sets.
Chloe Patterson,
Bree Brosig and Ritz won at Nos. 1-3 positions. Hathorn and Gomez also won in straight sets at Nos. 5 and 6. For Gomez, it was her team-leading 14th (14-6) singles win.
