SEGUIN, Texas – The McMurry University men's tennis team shutout host Texas Lutheran University, 9-0, snapping a two-game losing streak. The win improved the War Hawks to 4-2 on the year, while the Bulldogs fell to 3-3.
McM took control early by sweeping all three of the doubles matches. At No. 1,
Carlos Perez and
Hunter Ward topped Kyle Thompson and Greg Nelson, 8-3. No. 2 belonged to
Rayce Roberson and Ethan Rodriguez with an 8-2 decision over TLU's duo of Eric Beckenbach and Connor Dunmore, while third doubles went to McMurry's
Kie Jones and Kendall Mann, 8-2, over Ryan Beene and Adrian Balderas.
In the singles matches, Perez won at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-4 margin over Beene. Roberson won his team-leading fifth singles victory (5-1) in straight sets over Thompson, 6-2, 6-1.
At fourth singles and sixth singles,
Clayton Pope and Mann each won in straight sets, respectively. Pope defeated Greg Nelson and Mann won over Balderas, both taking their matches by identical 6-1, 6-3 scores.
The most hotly-contested contests were at the Nos. 3 and 5 matches.
Hunter Ward – facing TLU's Beckenbach – easily won the first set, 6-0, but fell in set two, 6-3, before taking the finale pro-set, 10-7. Jones dropped his first set, 7-6 (7-4) and then returned the favor to the Bulldogs' Nick Roccaforte in the second, 6-1. Set three went to Jones by a 10-8 score to complete the War Hawks' sweep.
