Nate Estrada scored a career-high 24 points, but it was not enough to keep his team from a suffering an 84-74 road loss at Sul Ross State University. The loss dropped the War Hawks to 2-14, while the Lobos improved to 8-7.
Estrada, a former Abilene High School player, made good on 7-of-14 from the floor, netting 3-of-5 from long range. Estrada was also a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. He also pulled down five rebounds.
For Estrada, it was also his eighth-consecutive game with double digit scoring, as well as 14th time in double figures in his team's 16 contests.
SRSU opened up its largest lead of the game in the first half, taking a 13-point advantage with 6:50 left until the intermission. McM would head to the locker room down 41-33 at the break.
McM head coach Zack Pickelman rallied his troops to open the second half. McMurry chipped away at the Lobos cushion, going on a 9-4 run in the first five minutes, capped by a trey from
Calvin McGee to make it 47-45. With 9:04 left to play, a pair of
Blake Cochran free throws knotted the game at 55-55.
Unfortunately for the visiting War Hawks, they would get no closer as SRSU re-took the lead and never trailed the rest of the way.
Cochran finished the game with a season-high 15 points. Cochran's night was buoyed by a 9-of-12 effort from the charity stripe.
Sophomore
LaRandall Scroggins was McM's only other player in double figures, chipping in 10 points. Scroggins also had a team-leading six rebounds.
McGee added eight points,
Zachary Campbell six and
Chris Cerny five points.
Thierry Tchenko's three points,
Gabriel Chacon's two points and
Romelo Robinson's one rounded out the War Hawks' scoring.
