ABILENE, Texas – Seniors
Catherine Heath and
Bethany Holub each netted 12 kills, but it was not enough as McMurry University volleyball dropped a 3-1 decision to the University of Mary-Hardin-Baylor at Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks (6-2) fell to the Cru (4-6) by scores of 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 25-14.
The loss also snapped McM's three-match win skein at three. It was also McMurry's first setback at the hands of an American Southwest Conference school this season.
In addition to Heath's and Holub's kill totals, junior
Katy Headrick knocked down nine kills in 19 attempts (with three errors) for a .316 attack percentage.
Autumn Quinn chipped in eight kills and
Audrey Sanders four.
Quinn also served up two of her team's three aces in the match. Holub and
Jessica Cory each registered 20 digs.
The Cru had 13 blocks as a team, while McM mustered six. Sanders had three of the War Hawk blocks. Quinn and
Lauren Heathcote each put up a pair of blocks, as well.
Morgan Thomas and
Madison Fatheree had 27 and 15 assists, respectively, for McMurry.
In set No. 1, McM trailed 5-3 before an 8-3 run put the hosts up 11-6. Neither team led by more than three points the rest of the way, with McMurry holding the lead at 22-21. But UMHB would convert on four of the final five points for the 25-23 set win.
Set No. 2 belonged to McM, as the War Hawks led wire-to-wire. Thomas gave McMurry a big lead to open the match, as she served seven-straight points and a 7-0 War Hawks' lead and the eventual set victory.
Despite a tough battle in set three, won by UMHB 25-22, the War Hawks would drop the final two sets and the match.
McMurry will play in the ASC crossover tournament this Friday and Saturday at UMHB, taking on UT-Tyler and LeTourneau in its matches.
