HOBBS, N.M. - Despite dropping a 2-0 road decision at the University of the Southwest, McMurry University head coach
Chris LeFevre feels that his team may have found a positive outcome. After permitting the Mustangs (2-1) a pair of first-half scores, the War Hawks (0-3) team peppered USW with six shots-on-goal in the second stanza.
"As a team we have been talking about our 'response'," LeFevre explained. "Whether it's to success or adversity. We finally – in this game – showed a great response. We gathered some momentum the last 15 minutes of the first half and established ourselves in the game. The second half we were a completely different team. We controlled the game; we defended everything they threw at us really well. We created chances. We showed a ton of growth today.
That's why you can't always focus on results. If you focus on results, this was a bad day; we lose 2-nil. It was a positive growth day for the group. There was a time in that first half they realized they could play; it definitely 'clicked'."
The Mustangs out-shot McM by a 21-10 margin, 10-2 in the first half of play. McMurry goalkeeper
Austin Long had seven saves, four in the second half.
Conversely, USW net-minder Humberto Estrada had six total saves, with five coming during the War Hawks' second-half surge.
Zack Smith was credited with five of McM's shot attempts, with
Kyle Riese notching two.
Matt Hernandez,
Jeronimo Aguilar, and
Martin Ornelas had one shot, apiece.
The War Hawks will look for their first victory of 2015 on Saturday (Sept. 12) at Huston-Tillotson College in Austin. Start time is slated for 3 p.m.
