ABILENE, Texas – In a battle of two regionally-ranked team in NCAA III, the No.14 McMurry men's tennis team scored a 6-3 win over No. 16-rated Southwestern University at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The victory improved the War Hawks' season record to 11-5, while the Pirates (10-2) lost for just the second time this season.
SU grabbed the early lead in the team score by taking two-of-three doubles bouts. McMurry's lone doubles win came at
Hunter Ward and
Carlos Perez were 8-5 victors over the Pirate tandem of Rod Khansari and William Ellis.
However, a strong singles showing – McM won five of six matches – propelled the hosts to the win. No. 1 singles featured a pair of regionally-ranked individuals, with McM's No. 25-ranked
Dani Perez winning a straight-set victory over No. 24-rated Nickoloz Snovely, 6-4, 6-4.
At No. 2 singles, senior
Casjen Rico picked up his team-high 14th singles win (14-2) with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 win over Ayinde Hall.
Tom Weir improved to 12-4 with his 6-2, 6-2 decision over SU's Oliver Farmen at No. 3.
Carlos Perez (12-3) and Ward won at the Nos. 5 and 6 singles spots, respectively. Perez won a 64-, 7-5 count over Neik Khansari and Ward took a 7-5, 6-4 win over the Pirates' Ellis.
