ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's men's tennis – ranked No. 14 in the West Region for NCAA Division III – won its fifth-consecutive match, with a 7-2 victory of the University of Texas-Dallas at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
The War Hawks (12-5) got off to a 3-0 start versus the Comets (3-7) in the team score by sweeping the doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, the McMurry tandem of
Casjen Rico and
Dani Perez earned an 8-5 decision over UTD's Hrudhay Ravula and Ryan Morton. Perez and Rico are now 7-3 in pairs play this season.
At the Nos. 2 and 3 bouts, the War Hawks dominated. At No. 2 doubles,
Carlos Perez and
Hunter Ward topped the comets' Grant Norris and Adam Lie, 8-0.
Tom Weir and
Rayce Roberson, playing No. 3 doubles, were 8-1 winners over Kalee Kuhn and Andres Peirano. Weir and Roberson improved their record to a team-leading 13-3 this year.
McM then won four of the six singles contests to nail down the team victory. The War Hawks crowned winners at the Nos. 2-5 matches.
At No. 2, McM's Rico picked up his team-best 15th win (15-2) in singles with his 6-2, 6-1 win over Morton. It was also Rico's 62nd career win in singles.
At No. 3, Weir defeated UTD's Kuhn, 6-0, 6-2, upping his record to 13-4. Roberson got the win at No. 4 singles – 6-3, 6-1 – over Norris. No. 5 belonged to McMurry's
Clayton Pope, thanks to his 6-3, 6-4 decision over Lie.
