ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry men's tennis team pitched a third-consecutive shutout at an opponent, blanking Texas Lutheran University, 9-0, at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The War Hawks (3-1) have not lost a match since the team's opening loss to NCAA Division I Southern Methodist University.
In doubles play to start the match, the Bulldogs battled the War Hawks hard in two of the three bouts. At No. 1 doubles, the McM tandem of
Casjen Rico and
Hunter Ward won by an 8-4 decision over Sanio Dizdarevic and Cliff Pack. At the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches, things were a little tighter.
No. 2 pairs play went to the McMurry duo of
Gabriel Aboitiz and
Dani Perez, 8-6. Meanwhile,
Rayce Roberson and
Tom Weir brought home No. 3 doubles for the War Hawks, 9-7.
McM swept all six singles matches in straight sets, receiving the biggest tests at Nos. 2 and three. Aboitiz made short work of Gunner Robison, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, before
Dani Perez was able to out-duel Dizdarevic, 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 at the No. 2 slot. At No. 3 singles, senior
Casjen Rico won the first set over TLU's pack, 6-3, before winning set two, 7-6 (7-4).
Weir handled No. 4 singles, convincingly taking care of the Bulldogs' Ryan Beene, 6-1, 6-2. Newcomer
Rayce Roberson followed with a 6-1, 6-1 No. 5 singles win over Greg Nelson.
Carlos Perez's No. 6 singles victory completed the sweep, topping TLU's Eric Beckenbach, 6-4, 6-3.
The War Hawks will play a pair of matches on Saturday versus Schreiner University (9 a.m.) and the University of Texas-Tyler (3 p.m.), both at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
