SHERMAN, Texas – For the second time in as many days the McMurry men's tennis team pitched a shutout against an opponent on the road, this time blanking Austin College, 9-0, at the Russell Tennis Center. The War Hawks improved to 2-1 on the year, while the Kangaroos are 0-1.
McM wrested control of matters from the outset, sweeping all three doubles matches in convincing fashion. At No. 1 doubles,
Casjen Rico and
Hunter Ward won 8-3, followed by an 8-2 victory from the duo of
Dani Perez and
Gabriel Aboitiz at No. 2 and an 8-4 win at No. 3 from the pairing of
Tom Weir and
Rayce Roberson.
The War Hawks won all six singles matches in straight sets, as well, not losing more than three games in any set played.
Dani Perez stepped up to play No. 1 singles, after McM head coach
Mark Hathorn decided to rest Aboitiz, who normally plays that position. Perez responded with a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Kangaroos' Cedric Ambulo
At No. 2, Rico was a 6-3, 6-1 victor over AC's Adam Dokos and Weir took care of Preston Glasscock at No. 3 (6-3, 6-2). Roberson dispatched of Erik Meendson, 6-1, 6-3 and
Carlos Perez dropped Jeff Kubena, 6-2, 6-1 at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, respectively. Ward was the winner at No. 6 singles over David Smith, 6-0, 6-2.
